Mexico was home to the first chili peppers, and today 90% of all chilies cultivated and consumed the world over are of Mexican origin. India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of chilli, which contributes to around 40% of total world production. Next to India, China is the major producer of chilli in the world. In India, chillies are grown in almost all the states. Andhra Pradesh is the largest producer of chilli in India contributing about 44 % to the total production, followed by Karnataka (12%), West Bengal (8%), Madhya Pradesh (7%), Maharashtra (4%) and Tamil Nadu (2%). In Andhra Pradesh rabi chilli crop is mostly grown in Medak, Ranga Reddy districts and surrounding areas of Hyderabad.
